What to do about Import Tariffs
Dealing with Tariffs on Construction Materials
According to April ConstructionDive: Contractors recieved a wave of price hike notices in March, even before new tariffs took effect, according to AGC. Construction input prices increased at a rapid pace for the third consecutive month in March and have now risen at a 9.7% annualized rate through the first quarter of 2025.
Here are a few ideas to mitigate the impact of tariffs on your construction supplies.
Consider procuring products manufactured in the United States
This is the most straight forward answer. U.S.-made products also often have the advantage of shorter lead times, and easier access to customer support or warranty services. These products also meet strict regulatory and quality standards, which can streamline compliance with building codes and reduce project delays.
One such company is American Connectors based in Fort Worth Texas. They have been manufacturing a line of quality Metal Clad (MC) cable connectors. The Per Fit line of MC cable connectors was developed to offer a connector that was internally machined to securely fit on a cable without the use of internal springs, retaining rigs, or any other separate internal holding device. American Connectors offers a range of products including water tight, non-water tight, and hazardous connectors that exceed most UL requirement standards. They are recognized industry wide for durability, reliability, and ease of use.
Alternative Products
Another strategy would be to submit on an alternative product that is is not steel. Underground Devices manufactures non-metallic cable racks for use in power and communications manholes or vaults in Yorkville, Illinois. These racks are non-conductive and will never rust or corrode. Grounding and insulators are no longer necessary. The Heavy Duty Rack has the same loading capacity as comparable steel cable racks.
Use Labor Saving Materials
Cost-effective materials will save on installation time to offset increased cost of other products. Every part in the Smart Trapeze System saves labor. From the nuts that snap onto the rods to the pre-cut strut. Plus you can use both sides of the strut without buying double strut. (Lighter for easy overhead installation).
Diversify Sources to Reduce Reliance
Don’t rely on a single source or country for materials. This minimizes the impact if tariffs are imposed on one specific country. Let me help you identify a locally owned supplier, to create a buffer against price increases and supply disruptions. 1 Industrial Source is here to work for you.
